Gustav List was born in Berlin, Germany in a family of the book printer. He was sent to study as a blacksmith, and then to the USA, where he mastered engineering at mechanical industries. At the age of 21 Gustav comes to his brother Adolf to Voronezh, Russia. Then he moved to Moscow, where created a pumping workshop. His pumps received the gold medal of the Russian Technical Society in 1864. Its feature was the complete absence of leather and wooden parts. Gustav List received the highest recognition. The Emperors themselves sought acquaintance with him: in 1872 List met Alexander II at the Moscow Industrial Exhibition, then he attended audiences with Alexander III and the last Emperor Nicholas II. The factories of Gustav List won the highest awards at two All-Russian industrial exhibitions in 1882 and 1896 and his products were well known all over the Europe at the end of XIX century.
